Underdrain

The Infinity™ Underdrain is a dual-lateral system, manufactured from a corrosion resistant lightweight material. The overall height of the underdrain when installed is a nominal 6". Each lateral is custom manufactured to the required filter width. Customized lateral lengths in excess of 30 feet without a joint can be manufactured.

The Infinity Underdrain eliminates potential joint failures since no assembly of individual lateral runs is required to assemble a complete lateral. There are no joints requiring snaps, clips, grout or other attachment devices requiring O-rings, tongue and groove connections or gasketing between blocks to assemble a complete lateral run. Each Infinity underdrain lateral is shipped to the job site completely assembled. Flume openings are pre-cut into each lateral and custom flume blocks are not required.

The Infinity Underdrain exhibits excellent distribution characteristics all with a low profile in order to maximize filter freeboard and bed depth. The top surface of each lateral contains the appropriate number of discharge orifices to assure proper distribution. This feature assures that filtered water will be uniformly collected, and backwash water uniformly discharged into the media placed above the underdrain system.

Gravity Filtration, Aries®

The Aries® Managed Air System is a revolutionary filter air scour system. The Aries is the preferred method of auxiliary wash for the cleansing of a filter, since it provides thorough cleansing of the entire filter bed versus surface wash systems or passive air systems which are only effective in the top layer of the filter bed.

The Aries Managed Air System provides "bottom-to-top" cleaning action which passive air systems do not. The location of the Aries Managed Air System at the gravel/media interface allows the introduction of pressurized air directly into the bottom of the filter media. By releasing pressurized air directly into the media, 100% of the air's energy is used to scour the media. In passive air/water underdrains, the underdrain absorbs most of the air's energy. By managing the air in a pressurized environment until it is introduced into the media; superior distribution is achieved which provides excellent cleaning at lower airflow rates.

Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is recognized as an excellent thermoplastic material for use in the manufacture of pipe for potable water and other pressure pipe applications. PVC has the highest tensile strength of all thermoplastic pipe now in use, and offers the best weight vs. working pressure ratio. The smooth interior surface of PVC pipe guarantees high flow and minimum friction loss for the life of the system. Scale buildup and internal corrosion are virtually eliminated in most applications. Ductile Iron pipe is manufactured by a metallurgical process which involves the addition of a magnesium alloy into molten iron, giving a graphite structure which is nodular. The pipe is centrifugally cast in water-cooled metal moulds. Casting is followed by heat treatment in a continuous annealing oven, after which the pipe passes through the various finishing operations. These include hydrostatic testing, cleaning, cement lining, coating and inspection. Rigid process and quality control is exercised throughout the manufacturing cycle.

Shaftless Screw Conveyor, Model TF

The Model TF Shaftless Screw Conveyor is utilized for the transport of screenings, grit or sludge in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment applications.

The conveyor body can be constructed of 304 or 316 stainless steel. The shaftless screw is available in high-strength alloy steel or stainless steel. The screw conveyor utilizes a fully enclosed U-trough with removable covers. The conveyor body is modular and custom-built for each application. Water Intake Screens

Passive intake screens, for the withdrawal of large volumes of water from streams, lakes, and reservoirs is an important segment of the products designed and manufactured by Hendrick Screen Company.

What Is Passive Screening?

Passive screening admits water through the intake point at a low, uniform velocity. Water passes through the screen while aquatic life and debris remain in the water source. The screens have no moving parts, therefore the term passive screening. The screens can be placed away from the shoreline for better water quality and distant from high concentrations of debris and marine life.

Passive water intake screens offer these advantages:

  • Very low slot velocity and uniform flow.
  • Environmentally fish friendly bio-fouling resistant screen material.

Keeping a Passive Hendrick Intake Screen Clean

Installing an intake screen at the proper depth, distance from the shoreline and proper distance from each other is a crucial step in avoiding clogging debris. Proper screen design is another. A Hendrick intake screen minimizes plugging problems with a perforated core tube that provides very low velocity uniform flow. Potentially plugging materials are not held against the screen surface.

In high debris environments, debris removal is achieved with the installation of a Hendrick airburst system. Debris is carried up and away from the screen surface with a rapid release of air through manifold of nozzles designed into the intake system.

Other design considerations will also determine whether or not a passive intake screen will remain free of debris. These factors include:

  • The screens proximity to the water surface
  • The proximity of screens to one another
  • Additional structures required to protect the screen
  • Support of screens in the water
  • The location of the air connection
  • The use of screens in multiple-level withdrawal
  • Rail systems for easy screen removal
  • The use and placement of a chemical feed line
  • Space requirements for airburst systems
  • Water temperature and ice formation

Fish Screens, Fish Diversion

Hendricks' fish diversion screens are used in dam and river systems throughout North America to protect fish from hydroelectric turbines and pumps. These screens comply with NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) standards and they are specified by the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, Corp of Engineers, and many state departments of fish and wildlife for the protection of fish. The fish screens are environmentally friendly to fish and other aquatic life.

Profile Bar for Fish Screen Applications

Hendrick Screen has a long history of success in the production of screens used in fish protection/diversion projects and continues to be a leader in this market.

When the strength and flatness of the fish screen is critical or a screen cleaner is used, the Hendrick Screen Profile Bar Screen construction should be specified. It is the strongest, flattest, most durable screen construction offered.

Some screen manufacturers will, as a substitute construction, quote "welded wedge," "resistance welded," "vee-wire," or "wire wrapped" screen as equal in place of the Hendrick Screen B69 Profile Bar screen. These other types of screens are usually less expensive than B69 Profile Bar screens and when represented as "equal" suggest a tempting cost-saving alternative. You should be aware of the differences in these screens and why the B69 is purposely specified over the other less expensive welded designs.

A critical part of a mechanically cleaned screen installation is the screen itself. Construction of these welded types of screens are vastly different than the Profile Bar screens and are not an "equivalent," simply a less expensive alternative. Differences in the screens include the following:

  • Construction: Profile Bars screen wires (bars) are over twice the height and weight of other screen wires. The taller Profile Bar makes the individual wires substantially stronger and stiffer than the v-wire found on other screens. The cheaper welded screens require a thicker wire to achieve reasonable wire strength. Wider wires substantially limit the open area of a screen, especially a screen with a 0.069" slot, as required on most fish projects. Profile Bar screens provide a large open area and narrow wire width with superior wire strength and stiffness.
  • Assembly: Profile Bars are assembled into "U" shaped clips with retaining pins staking the bars into place. The precision slots in the "U" clip are 0.250" deep holding the bars firmly in place, making the bars very resistant to bending or tilting out of place. Other screen wires are held in place by resistance (spot) welds or TIG welds. 
    Profile Bar screens are less subject to damage in instances where a heavy object such as a tree trunk, truck tire, or animal carcass is forced against the screen by the cleaner scrappers. Profile Bar also has the greatest impact strength of the commonly used screens. Other wires can be subject to bending or weld breakage under heavy loads or impacts.
  • Supports: The stronger bars on Profile Bar screens allow the spacing between the support rods to be greater. The greater distance between support rods decreases the accumulation of stringy debris impinged on the screen.
  • Flatness: Profile Bar screens are an assembly, not a weldment. The height of the bars and the absence of welds provide a very flat and stable screen face that is ideal for use with a screen cleaner. Welded screens have thousands of weld stress points that cause them to have a "wavy" surface and an overall "out of flat" perimeter. Profile bar screens are flat to 0.060" per sq ft of screen.
  • Open area: The new B69 profile bar wire with a 0.069 face width will provide a 50% open area for fish screen applications while providing much greater strength than the 069 V-wire welded constructions.
  • Service life/economy of use: The superior damage resistance of Profile Bar screens when used with a mechanical screen cleaner will provide an improved economy and less maintenance than the initially less expensive welded screens.

We ask that you consider the Hendrick Screen B69 profile bar construction and evaluate the initial price of the screen to the long term cost and maintenance of the welded screen construction when designing you next fish or diversion screen.

If your application does not require the flatness and strength of profile wire construction, Hendrick Screen produces a wide variety of resistance welded v-wire screens for your diversion requirements.
