Horizontal Pressure Filters & GAC Systems

Roberts horizontal pressure filters in diameters up to 12 feet. Different from other pressure filters in the industry, Roberts pressure filters utilize the low head loss Infinity™ Underdrain and the Aries® Managed Air System. These unique features reduce backwash head requirements, improve backwash distribution characteristics, and achieve efficient backwash cycles. These features simplify design and minimize startup complications.

Pressure filters have a specific advantage over gravity filters in ground water applications because the filtration system is typically designed to operate on line pressure and no secondary pumping is required between the raw water source and the distribution system. Specifically, pressure filter systems have been developed to focus on common ground water problems like iron, manganese, radium, and hardness. For high iron and manganese applications, Roberts pressure filters can be provided with manganese greensand and potassium permanganate feed systems.

Horizontal pressure filters are especially well suited for the high volume flows required by large municipalities, industries, and power utilities. The unique Roberts multi-cell backwash system offers the economy of horizontal pressure filters, without the need for backwash pumps.

Our largest standard units have more than 500 square feet of filtering area, and can reliably supply plants that treat from 1 to 25 million gallons per day.

Roberts horizontal multi-cell designs partition the unit to form individual filter cells. They can often be used as a cost-effective substitute to multiple vertical units.

Vertical Pressure Filters & GAC Systems

Roberts offers vertical pressure filters in diameters up to 12 feet. Different from other pressure filters in the industry, Roberts pressure filters utilize the low head loss Infinity™ Underdrain and the Aries® Managed Air System. These unique features reduce backwash head requirements, improve backwash distribution characteristics, and achieve efficient backwash cycles. These features, along with Roberts standard instrumentation and control package, simplify design and minimize startup complications.

Roberts pressure filters typically offer lower initial and operating costs than conventional systems, and the package nature of these systems greatly simplifies the design and installation for the engineer and contractor.

Roberts specializes in large flow, large capacity systems. Standard vertical pressure filters up to 12 feet in diameter offer an especially cost effective and reliable solution for iron and manganese removal, turbidity reduction, and process water filtration.

Roberts pressure filters can be configured for a variety of direct pumping treatment configurations. Consult our engineering staff for cost-saving solutions.

Underdrain

The Infinity™ Underdrain is a dual-lateral system, manufactured from a corrosion resistant lightweight material. The overall height of the underdrain when installed is a nominal 6". Each lateral is custom manufactured to the required filter width. Customized lateral lengths in excess of 30 feet without a joint can be manufactured.

The Infinity Underdrain eliminates potential joint failures since no assembly of individual lateral runs is required to assemble a complete lateral. There are no joints requiring snaps, clips, grout or other attachment devices requiring O-rings, tongue and groove connections or gasketing between blocks to assemble a complete lateral run. Each Infinity underdrain lateral is shipped to the job site completely assembled. Flume openings are pre-cut into each lateral and custom flume blocks are not required.

The Infinity Underdrain exhibits excellent distribution characteristics all with a low profile in order to maximize filter freeboard and bed depth. The top surface of each lateral contains the appropriate number of discharge orifices to assure proper distribution. This feature assures that filtered water will be uniformly collected, and backwash water uniformly discharged into the media placed above the underdrain system.

Gravity Filtration, Aries®

The Aries® Managed Air System is a revolutionary filter air scour system. The Aries is the preferred method of auxiliary wash for the cleansing of a filter, since it provides thorough cleansing of the entire filter bed versus surface wash systems or passive air systems which are only effective in the top layer of the filter bed.

The Aries Managed Air System provides "bottom-to-top" cleaning action which passive air systems do not. The location of the Aries Managed Air System at the gravel/media interface allows the introduction of pressurized air directly into the bottom of the filter media. By releasing pressurized air directly into the media, 100% of the air's energy is used to scour the media. In passive air/water underdrains, the underdrain absorbs most of the air's energy. By managing the air in a pressurized environment until it is introduced into the media; superior distribution is achieved which provides excellent cleaning at lower airflow rates.

The Aries Managed Air System can be installed and removed without replacing the filter media, and it is adaptable to any filter design without the need for replacing the underdrain.

Gravity Filtration, Trilateral™

The Trilateral™ Air/Water Underdrain from Roberts Leotech offers water producers and their consulting engineers flexibility to choose an underdrain system for their specific needs.

The Trilateral underdrain uses a passive air-scour approach to replace conventional, water-only backwashes. This proven design offers a low cost, easy to assemble combined air/water or water-only underdrain installation.

The Roberts Leotech Trilateral Underdrain System is an excellent system for filters utilized in both water and wastewater treatment plants. The Trilateral is designed to provide efficient distribution of backwash water for both water only backwashes and combined air/water backwashes.

Gravity Filtration, Wheeler Bottoms

Structurally reliable and hydraulically efficient, Roberts Wheeler underdrain systems offer an unsurpassed service life. Most remain in service after a half-century of continuous use.

Precast systems often offer the best solution for retrofit applications and installations where it is not feasible to create a flume to collect and distribute flow. Since they do not require an accessible plenum, they can be used on sites where changes in underdrain elevation cannot be tolerated.

Rehabilitation of Wheeler underdrains can be simply accomplished by installing Roberts Retroliners to restore the hoppers in a Wheeler underdrain to as new condition. Rehabilitation of existing Wheeler Bottom underdrains is a more cost-effective alternative to underdrain demolition and replacement.

Gravity Filtration, Fiberglass Trough

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic Troughs provide the advantages of permanent corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance. Molded-in color eliminates the need for painting. Their light weight simplifies installation and reduces shipping costs.

Roberts Troughs come in a variety of standard widths and depths to accommodate any carrying capacity. Special sizes, shapes, adjustable weir plates, transitions, outlet flanges, drop boxes, etc., can be designed for virtually any application.

Dynamic Probe™

The Dynamic Probe provides the information required to optimize pretreatment, filtration and filter backwash. In addition, the Dynamic Probe replaces differential pressure (head loss) and water level sensors for each filter.

The Dynamic Probe is a 2-inch diameter stainless steel sensor designed to an individual filters media profile and maximum water level. The sensor and its dedicated PLC gathers, stores, and charts filter and backwash data.

The Dynamic Probe represents the first intelligent analyzer package, designed specifically for the water and wastewater treatment industry that combines multiple process variables and sensors into a single instrument.
